Performing girl and boy: gender, belonging, and popularity. To be male is to not be female and vice versa. To be masculine is to not be feminine and vice versa. Binary is heavily policed and bounded gender binary is one of heaviest policed binaries in society constantly told how to behave, act, talk, engage with members of opposite sex. Borderwork how adults are constantly reinforcing gender binaries. Natural": gender/culture, gender is related to culture because your culture/society determines how you perform gender. Normative model: believe that if you have female sex then you"re feminine, if you have male sex you"re masculine, this model is dominant, considered to be norm . School, sports, psychology, media, peer groups, family. We become gendered not just how we think of ourselves, but how other people tell us to be they also control our engagement in the world.
