Childhood as a specific period with goals emerged in the 1700"s during the enlightenment period and continued into the romantic period. Late 1800"s and early 1900"s gave rise to more specific developmental theories of childhood and adolescence. Child labor: need someone to work the machines: small fingers and small bodies. Very different way of thinking what a child might be. Not working; children working made it harder for adults to get jobs. Aristotle: youth are heated by nature as drunken . Socrates: inclined to contradict parents and tyrannize their teachers . Hall (1904) a period of heightened storm and stress he introduced the term adolescence. 1960s and 1970s: attempts to understand the problems as due to raging hormones . Magazine covers and news stories about teenagers. The transition from: child status (requires adult monitoring) to adult status (self- responsibility for behavior; sexual maturation; adult roles and responsibilities) The developmental interval that encompasses the body and brain changes of puberty.
