Chys 1f90: introduction to child and youth studies. Lecture 1 thinking socio-culturally about children and youth. Transitioning from a developmental perspective to a socio-cultural perspective. Social structures such as the government, media, education, racism, sexism, etc. These are massive forces that control what happens to us; causes opportunities and barriers. Social inequality unfair and unequal social forces/situations due to social structures. Social justice an understanding of seeing others differently and treating others differently. Privilege / oppression determines when you have power and when you don"t. Note: (*) items refer to areas that will be discussed in this course. Not the norm for an 18 month old child. The parents behaviour (introducing and encouraging the child to smoke) is seen as inappropriate to the child"s development.
