Social challenges and diversity ta notes: critical question. In what ways can diversity be defined: identity. We have a need to be both different and to belong in groups. Identity is self-definition, sense of who one is, where one is going in life, and how one fits into society. It is also related to the connections we make with other. Sense of in group and out of group: identity. Everything around us can both challenge or support identity. Showed how we deindividuate and become the roles we are given. Philip zimbardo has students at stanford u play the roles of prisoner and prison guards in the basement of psychology building. They were given uniforms and numbers for each prisoner: identity. People get swept up in a group and lose sense of self. Group members suppress their reservations about the ideas supported by the group. This tends to be worse in highly cohesive groups.
