Science= method of understanding the physical and mental world (what you can measure)- Not spiritual and experimental worlds because they cannot be measured, so cannot accurately be predicted. Ideographic development= individual variations or differences in development: explain development. Why do people develop differently: optimize development- by applying research findings to the real world. Children have generally been viewed in a very similar light over the course of history, with only some exceptions- some aspects are new and evolving, many others have deep roots in history. Aries suggested that childhood was not a known concept or practiced in medieval times because of the high death rates and labor demands- but no!! childhood is a universal concept. Cultures change over time, the way things are done changes over time, but childhood remains constant ex. Ancient egypt- mothers constantly looked after children- nurtured them, held them close, fed them.
