General Ethics Principles
• Respect for human dignity
o Protect all the interests of participants: bodily, psychological and cultural
o Attention to the welfare of participants
• Free and informed consent
o Agreeing to participate and the right to terminate
o Complicated for children
• Respect for vulnerable persons
o Children
o Mentally incompetent
o Anyone who is institutionalized: patients, elderly, prisoners, psychiatric wards
o All of the above need special considerations
o Risk of abuse, exploitation and discrimination
• Privacy and confidentiality
o Protecting control, access and dissemination of personal information
o Privacy: includes the fact of research participation
o Confidentiality: ensuring no link between personal information and identity
o Special considerations with children retention of records
• Justice and inclusiveness
o Procedural Justice: responsibility of the REB
o Distributive Justice: no one group unfairly burdened with the harms of research
• Balancing harms and benefits
o Foreseeable harms should not outweigh benefits
o Minimizing harm: participants subjected to most minimal harm possible, any
harm must be essential to scientific and societal good derived from research
