Clas 1p92 lecture 1 notes : from village to empire. Nb : women were citizens but had no legal standing (couldn"t vote). Also the romans hated kings and anyone trying to become king was removed from power and despised. Rome is basically in a swamp fertile; food is plentiful also abundance of mosquitoes. Later adopted by a shepherd: they fight and romulus kills remus, romulus founds rome with 6 other kings. Strange because fratricide is highly frowned upon and leads to blood guilt. People get tired of tyrannical kings and kill/expel them: two consuls elected annually. Roman republic (509-44 bc) relatively stable until 44 citizen assemblies elect officials to govern. End of the republic (44bc: brutus and conspirators assassinate julius caesar (he set himself up to become king) civil war ensued but octavian, caesar"s nephew ended up winning and, as heir, named himself.
