The sanctuary of zeus at olympia: atlis = sacred enclosure, water jug inscribed with i am pheidias . Chryselephantine = gold and ivory cult statue of zeus, by pheidias, 13 m high: made of ivory, but ivory cracks in the dry greek climate. Pool of oil in the front, to put on the statue to keep it taken care of. Coins minted by elis; plus other images of zeus from other contexts. Nike statue and robe of zeus = gold; body was ivory. Throne carved and decorated with semi-precious stones and ivory. Not a solid sculpture, hollow wooden structure that is covered with the ivory and gold. Temple is usually only open around the festival. Zeus is an incredible impressive feature of this sanctuary and it makes the sanctuary one of the most incredible places to visit. Religion = activities aimed at pleasing a god: has symbols = reflects man"s relationship with the power of the sacred".
