Provide an introduction to gretl a free open-source econometric software package which is downloadable from the website http://gretl. sourceforge. net/. Specifically, you will learn how to open data files, obtain descriptive statistics, etc. Demonstrate the use of gretl to investigate the relationship between two variables. As noted in class, the relationship between two variables, say, earnings and age, could be investigated graphically using a scatterplot or numerically by computing a sample covariance or sample correlation. The best way to study relationships is by constructing regression models. The nice thing about regression is that you can predict the mean value of the dependent variable, also called the regressor, given the value(s) of the independent variable(s), also called the regressor(s). Consider the excel data file cps04. xls and the corresponding data description file cps04_description. pdf, which are available in the labs folder on sakai. In this exercise, you will investigate the relationship between a worker"s age and his/her earnings.
