To conservatives, multicultural means anything that is not white, which lets european north american values prevail. To liberals, multiculturalism stresses equality of the races so social and economic differences are seen as barrier to equality. This results in studying exotic cultures, multicultural days and language learning programs for immigrants. Multicultural education programs strive to have shared participation through prejudice- reduction strategies and equity programs. The perception that multiculturalism caters to minorities allows white majority to sit on the sideline as it doesn"t affect them. This distances them from minorities and privilege themselves by not seeing disadvantages to oppression. Book defines multicultural education as allowing development of potential and critical abilities of all children regardless of differences. Social stratification is the hierarchical ranking of groups in society and the stratifications are based on socially created categories of biological, physical etc categories. Meanings attributed to these groups change over time and aren"t fixed.
