Graphic novel and film: bryan lee o"malley"s scott pilgrim vol. Last class, we finished by considering the use of allusions and realism in the story. This helps us to refresh the ideas of where literature comes from - and where scott pilgrim comes from. Compared to a map of the graphic novel. Obviously, a narrative that involves characters rollerskating through dreamscapes in order to deliver packages is not realistic. Indeed, realism is punctured in many ways in the graphic novel, from the video game motif, to the supernatural elements, and more. There is more to consider here, though, and i would like to pause on the oneiric (of or relating to dreams) qualities of the work - the dream spaces. Dreams are, after all, that very real part of our lives where real life meets symbolic representation.
