ENGL 2P11 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Literal And Figurative Language
Document Summary
Engl 2p11 fantasy in early children"s literature. Modern fantasy: originate from an author distinguished by story elements that break the natural, phsycial laws of our world, the author must create a new set of physical laws and then conform unerringly to them. Heroism: called to adventure, crosses threshold, survive carious trials, assisted, matures, returns home. It clarifies the human condition and captures the essence of our deepest emotions, dreams, hopes, and fears. If fantasy does not do these things, it fails. Fantasy casts light on the realities of life much the same way a metaphor illustrates truth in general communication. Metaphor is figurative language and strengthens writing in at least three ways: speeds understanding: makes the abstract become concrete, creates interest, adds emotional appeal. Yet the metaphor is more than the sum of the above parts. It involves the reader more with the story or message, allowing for quicker learning, more precise understanding, and longer retention because of the image.
