Usually structuralism is only talked about in order to better explain poststructuralism. Strauss and jakobson) introduced the idea that meaning is achieved through language binaries, while semioticians (eg. culler, barthes, and scholes) argued that meaning is created through complex interlocking sign systems. A sign is a communicative unit word and linguists argued that these are made up of two parts. Cat the sound cat is the signifier and the signified is the object the image of a cat that comes into your head. The signified is the concept and the signifier is the words (verbal). Signs are both our brain is connecting these two automatically. Signifiers are arbitrary different languages have different signifiers for certain objects. Important question they ask - how language learning and systems of language play out in culture cultures put things in categories of pure/impure, sinful/not sinful.
