ENGL 2P82 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Petruchio, Women Pleased, Ladylike
Document Summary
Induction scenes that frame the play that present it as a play within a play. Inductions (leadings) are common in english renaissance drama, they get the audience"s attention and give the audience time to settle down before it begins. Induction scenes have the ability to do more than just get the audience"s attention. If developed at length, an induction functions as a meta-dramatic frame for the play. The induction mediates between the audience and the main play offering the audience a window/perspective of the play that they can accept or reject but cannot simply ignore. We realise that these are all just actors, like how we know that cameo the school master is lucentio in disguise: compare the opening of the first induction scene with the opening of act 1 scene 1. Colorful dialogue between the hostess and sly in the intro.
