The word error comes from the latin word errare which is an infinitive and it has 2 meanings . Think of the comedy of errors on the meditation upon the significance of mistakes. Were all aware that a mistake can be a very powerful source of comedy, aristotle believed that error was the main source of comedy. This aristotelian claim was a common place of early renaissance literary theory and shakespeare would have encountered this in the preface of the play this play is based on. Many european dramatists imitated plawtoses and terrance"s work. Shakespeare doubles the confusion by giving the twin brothers identical twin servants and he links the main action of the play with the story of egeon and emilia and this changes the play qualitatively and quantitatively. Imitation provided renaissance dramatists with the opportunity to explore the nature of the comedies they imitated. It"s a comedy that explores both the roots and the structure of comedy.
