Semiotic 2073- no based on thinking about words as standing in for something absent. Language works on the assumption that we can talk about things that aren"t present. The semiotic is about the sounds and cried that are produced: 2072 the chora is not yet a position . The mother the realm of rhythm, the regulation of lows. Words divide the world up into discreet units. The symbolic divides the world up into discreet entities, the semiotic however is the real of rhythm and continuity. The semiotic precedes that which the foundation is built. Kristeva will argue for the priority of the semiotic, and will suggest that it"s behind creativity and the rhythm of poetry. Poetry can use the resources of the semiotic to break out of the discreet units. For lacan the unconscious is just another kind of language or symbolic order acting in ways which we are not aware. The semiotic might be kristeva"s unconscious, but not lacan"s.
