Ecostratigraphy: concerned with correlating strata on the basis of the paleoecological significance of their contained fossils. Essentially recognizes a unit of rock having a distinctive assemblage of organisms reflecting a particular set of environmental conditions. By their nature, ecostratographic zones, ecozones have diachronous surfaces, reflecting environmental fluctuations; but over short distances can be nearly diachronous and have very high stratigraphic resolution (as little as 10s or 100s years or less).
