The anatomical structure of the muscular portion of the heart allows for the physiological pumping action. Microscopic: cannot be seen without magnification: cytology: study of cells, histology: study of tissues. Macroscopic: can be seen without magnification: surface: morphology, regional: areas, spatial relationships, systemic: organ systems. Levels of organization: cell, the smallest living unit in the body. Consists of organelles: tissue, many cells and some surrounding material. Epithelial, muscular, neural & connective: organ, combination of tissues. The heart consists of all the above-mentioned tissues: organ system, combination of various organs make up a specific system. The stomach, sm intestine, lg intestine, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas make up the digestive system.
