HLSC 2P49 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Angina Pectoris, Male Reproductive System, Red Blood Cell
Document Summary
Transport system: how nutrients get to cells and how waste products get taken away from the cells. Muscular portion of the heart is called the myocardium. Comprised of 4 chambers: 2 upper are called atriums, 2 lower are called ventricles. Arteries = away from the heart: take oxygenated blood to cells. Veins = to the heart: bring deoxygenated blood to the heart. Like squeezing a balloon, heart pumping increases pressure: closed system. Blood pressure is the force exerted on the vessel walls. Blood pressure is represented by both: systolic/diastolic. Consistently high blood pressure = hypertension: systolic above 140, diastolic above 90, 22% of canadians. Blood volume: higher blood volume can cause higher blood pressure. Peripheral resistance: difficult fluid has in passing through narrow openings (ex. arterioles, meal -> intestine arterioles expand, allowing more blood in that region therefore blood pressure is lower because the arterioles are expanded.
