Ethnocentrism is generally defined as viewing one's own culture as superior to all others. However, quite often, it is not quite that obvious. Whenever we encounter something that seems strange or different, we will feel some degree of discomfort. How we respond to that feeling is a gauge of how ethnocentric we are about it. Let's suppose that you are entertaining a business client from France. You take him to a very fine restaurant where he looks over the menu very carefully, then asks the waiter if he or she, by chance, has cheval available. The waiter shakes his head and explains that it is not served in American restaurants. Your client becomes somewhat upset and tells you that a truly fine restaurant would serve "proper" cuisine and that he was very disappointed with American hospitality so far. He eventually settles for the prime rib but is ill-tempered for the rest of the evening. The next morning, he leaves for France without consummating the expected business deal. Your boss asks you what happened, and you explain that the client was upset because the restaurant didn't serve something called cheval. Your boss's eyes pop and he yells, "You mean he actually ordered horsemeat?"

How much ethnocentrism is at work? Discuss what and how a better understanding of cultural differences in food preferences by all parties could have prevented the unfortunate incident. What was your response to learning that the client wanted horsemeat? What was your response to his anger that he couldn't get it?

Please help me answer number 6, however I included number 5 becuase it is needed to answer number 6. I think that they are trying to find a purebred line of retriever, and they are starting with pruebred parents. However the one retriever is mentally unstabe and this shows in the F2 generation but how?

5. Dog breeding, especially at unregulated kennels, often involves inbreeding. This and strong selection has led to a number of homozygous recessive disorders in the more popular dog breeds. Suppose we have this hypothetical situation. One breeder has a purebred golden retriever that is restless and easily excited but, she has the purest golden coat color. Another breeder has a purebred golden retriever that is also mentally unstable but, he has problem-free hips (no arthritis). The two breeders agree to mate the two and a litter of 6 are born. The pups have the desired golden coats and strong hips, and much to the surprise of the breeders, a more normal disposition. The pups are obedient and friendly towards strangers. Thinking they have hit a perfect line of golden retrievers, they wait and inbreed the 6. Over some years, they produce over 100 progeny from the 6. They are somewhat mystified by the offspring phenotype distribution. 80 pups had the expected normal disposition but, 48 were nervous and irritable and could not be sold. Explain the genetics of golden retriever disposition. List genotypes and phenotypes of the F2 generation and explain the relationships between gene and allele products. (note how difficult these problems would be if the parental lines were not purebred)

6. Please revisit the golden retriever situation in problem 5. The inbreeding leads to an F2 showing a different phenotype distribution. In terms of disposition, 169 are normal and 39 are abnormal. List genotypes and phenotypes of the F2 generation and explain the relationships. Explain how the genes involved interact, be as specific as possible by assigning definite functions to the proteins.(note how difficult these problems would be if the parental lines were not purebred!)
