Racism, sexism, all kinds of ~isms take advantage of distinctions that have no bearing on the character of the person being encountered. They tend to be inherent in many of the relationships & institutions that we share. Because one group tends to be a majority & control the greater culture, it tends to privilege its own members. Tolerance points to the fact that there is a right and wrong, showing difference. The looks & behaviors of a certain individual can lead to assumptions. If we don"t establish a positive personal identity, we collapse: old fashioned racism. Generally assumes a right to oppress the group its: symbolic racism focused on.
