Notes kine 1p93: coakley"s chapter on violence and sport. Violence is the use of excessive physical force, which causes or has obvious potenial to cause harm or destrucion (coakley, 2015). Athletes are paid for violence in sport. Cultural changes are needed to control violence. Violent sports are economically successful because people want to play/ watch them. Dominant gender ideology links manhood with the ability to do violence. There is no similar link with womanhood: women paricipaing in contact sport contradicts the viewpoint of women as frail and vulnerable but reairms them as disadvantaged. Using violence as a strategy in non-violent sports inimidate opponents. Using violence as a strategy in contact sports: use to achieve compeiive success, use violence to promote career, incr. drama for spectators, & enhance publicity. Current focus on head trauma and concussions. Others include: arthriis, bone fractures, torn ligaments, etc.
