Athletes are paid for violence in sport. Cultural changes are needed to control violence. Violent sports are economically successful because people want to play/ watch them. Dominant gender ideology links manhood with the ability to do violence. There is no similar link with womanhood: women paricipaing in contact sport contradicts the viewpoint of women as frail and vulnerable but reairms them as disadvantaged. Using violence as a strategy in non-violent sports inimidate opponents. Using violence as a strategy in contact sports: use to achieve compeiive success, use violence to promote career, incr. drama for spectators, & enhance publicity. Current focus on head trauma and concussions. Others include: arthriis, bone fractures, torn ligaments, etc.
