A word is a sequence of speech sounds that follow phonotactic constraints and has meaning. A sentence is a sequence of words that follow syntactic rules. Morphological inflections selects syntactic category ex certain endings like ing, s, ed only attach to verbs so syntactic category must exist. Words are assembled into multi word expressions called phrases. Every phrase has an essential word in it, called its head and the head names the phrase. Ex the book, an old book, books. The is a definite determiner and a is a indefinite determiner. Ex ate, ate pizza, ate very quickly, slowly walked away, put the book on the table.
