October 11, 2013 lecture- continuation of unit 2 morphology. October 31st and november 28th important dates. (look on sakai)- plaza 600 f: we have to define what a word is because it is arbitrary, it can have more than one morpheme. We can"t use the definition that it is a sentence with a space in between and after it because that is only for written language, our sentences flow. It is a continuous acoustic signal where words begin and end, it"s an open question- difficult to identify words begin and end is- listen to a foreign language: writing systems are relatively new. We can"t rely on the writing system to tell us where the words begin and end. If it can stand alone, and it can move. It isn"t required to stay in a particular spot. It isn"t confined to its position in the sentence.
