LING 1P92 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Language Acquisition Device, Universal Grammar, Jean Berko Gleason
Document Summary
Poverty of stimulus means quality of language input children receive is inadequate for learning (chomsky) and adults do not provide feedback to wrong utterances. Adults only respond to factual errors children make. Language acquisition device (lad) allows kid to attend to language around them and they hypothesize how language works and generate rules of grammar for their language. Principles contained in lad are universal grammar and parameters are set to certain language. Critical period hypothesis says lad functional until puberty and after that language learning is harder. Children appear to be applying rules like as seen in the wug test (they know to add s to make a noun plural and this shows they do not just imitate others since they never heard wugs before) Adults recast children speech (they repeat a incorrect utterance in a correct way and highlighting what mistake was made) and children notice the difference.
