Made rapid progress of vocabulary acquisition, motivated to learn words for things, used language to talk about past events and able to form simple sentences. Her first words were emotional or descriptive while other children"s first words are those for objects or people. Genie used gestures naturally so they switched to sign language and didn"t want to limit genie to expressing herself just through speech. They couldn"t know if she had mental retardation and that was the cause for poor language skills or if critical period passed and that"s why she couldn"t learn it effectively could"ve been neglect as well. Had difficulty with grammatical structure despite vocabulary, she had word order errors and left out functional category words and bound morphemes.
