Phoneme (smallest linguistic unit that makes a difference in meaning (bat vs. pat) Participant is played a recording of continuous speech. Participant presses a button when a target phoneme (ex. /b/) is heard but also tried to understand the speech to test. Monitor eye gaze during reading and measure fixation times. Resource sharing: get them to do 2 difference tasks. We can vary whether the phoneme occurs before or after the word we want. Hypothesis: low frequency words= long fixation times high frequency words= short fixation times.
