When working with adults: onset of stutering less important than for children. Not developmental stutering unless started under 6: history of stutering management much more important than for children. Why are they here now: person with stutering must demonstrate moivaion to change. People"s memories how how stutering develops may not be accurate- memory is not oten reliable. Some people may have memories that they stutered, but is actually normal dysluency- we would not classify it as stutering. 75% of people who stutered as young children (2-5) don"t stuter anymore. But we don"t know for sure if we would classify it as stutering as slps- the severity and types of dysluency makes a diference. Stutering is accompanied by blocks, fears, prolongaions, tension, etc. If 3% of your syllables are dysluent without accompanying by word fears, shame etc- it"s not stutering. Twin studies- if one twin stuters, it increases the probability the other twin will stuter (esp if idenical twins)
