Sometimes only one rule is possible, making decisions about the underlying form obvious. Sometimes 2 rules are possible, one a brute, and the other elegant and simple. Phonology is more than just a nice game of logic; it helps us understand something about the nature. Rules that change 2 or more underlying forms into the same surface form (phonetic realization) in the same context. *don"t make the assumption that the words without the affix is the underlying form* Part of the whole grammatical structure, from syntax to phonetics. Output of morphology (mental lexicon with its tags) is input of phonology. Morphemes are assembled (ex. dag+z dog+s) and input to the phonological system which modifies their phonetic specification before sending it to the phonetic articulatory system to produce. One word is not used to derive other words a very important concept! Rather, the singular and plural words cat and cat are both derived from the same abstract morpheme, cat.
