Thin muscle sheet, saw shaped, origins (ribs 1-8, 9), insertion (scapula medial border) Innervation: long thoracic nerve (5th -7th cervical spinal nerves) Function: protracts and rotates scapula; holds scapula close to thoracic wall. Directed downward & medially; fibres end at anterior intercostal. Muscles of inhalation; raise & lateralize ribs. Approximately 90degrees to those of external intercostal muscles; Interosseous internal intercostals stiffen spaces between ribs and lower ribs; intercartilaginous internal intercostals help to raise ribs. Case #2: woman referred for voice therapy: no voice (including whisper), complicated vague history- told she has a damaged phrenic nerve. Breathing?, it"s the nerve that controls the diaphragm and allows it to contract. Since she doesn"t have that breathing and has asthma, Musclar portion (3 attachments)- origins at xiphoid process of sternum, attachments along the cartilage of ribs 7-12, and attachment at the upper lumbar vertebrae.
