Clinically, we must have some understanding about the variations of english in order to differentiate between cases where a client"s pronunciation reflects normal variation and cases in which there may be a speech sound disorder. Sources of phonetic variation: dialect: a variety of a language that is mutually intelligible with all other dialects of that language transmittable by. Some label varieties as dialects if they are subordinate to a standard language spoken in the same area common speech) which is this variety is not. Ex. mainland china has a standard language (putonghua: translate as mutually intelligible to all of the other varieties. This doesn"t preclude transient miscommunications, but messages should be supplementing them with other information (ex. pin-pen merger) In canada/usa, we don"t have a fancy academy like in france but there is an implicit standard that is reflected in the variety of english that is taught in schools/used in the media.
