An approach to the analysis of spoken discourse that looks at the way in which people manage their everyday conversational interactions. Ca examines aspects of spoken discourse such as sequences of related utterances (adjacency pairs), preferences for particular combinations of utterances (preference organization), turn taking, feedback, repair, openings and closings, discourse markers and response tokens. Ca works with recordings of spoken data and carries out careful and fine-grained analyses of this data. Can be both a deeper meaning or on a descriptive level. What do conversation analysts do: record conversations, they look for patterns of some sort; particular patterns (ie. successful vs unsuccessful) Transcription & coding tools of the ca trade: transcribing each other utterances, very detailed analysis, coding; this is the analysis, huge part of the analysis. 92 (notice how carrie and her friends manage their conversation in a cooperative manner turn taking.
