You present tone to the transducer on one side, you"d present the masking headphones in the other ear. As sound gets louder in one hear, your other ear may be helping you hear it so they send noise into the other ear (white noise) to mask out any help it may be giving. Direct them to only respond to noise in the test ear. Its important for bone conduction testing bc your whole skull vibrates; you want to mask out one ear to just test one side through. Don"t always mask for air conduction; when air is at moderate intensity, that"s when you use masking. If one ear is better than the other you test better ear first, you want to be masking the other ear to get a true sense of what it hears. For insert head phones, you mask at 55db hl (some vibration starts to occur at. For big headphones, you mask at 40db hl.
