Document Summary

If we view politics as the struggle over who gets what, when, and how, we can see how issues of women"s (in) equality are central to political struggle. The issue is not simply one of who gets what, but also who determines who gets what: i. e. are women actively involved in political decision making. Important decisions about both material and non-material interest are made in the political realm. Political decisions have broad implications for the private sector. Decisions about wages, working conditions, pay equity, paternal/maternal leave, and pensions all have important implications for women"s work. As sylvia bashevkin argues: women who are involved in politics, broadly speaking, often participate in less active/public roles that we traditionally associate with politics (i. e. elected/office) There are proportionately more women in volunteer positions and less who hold office and participate in elite level politics.
