Document Summary

Understanding unions lecture 2 notes- october 4, 2016. Unions are organizations made up of dues-paying member who work to advance the interests of workers collectively, both in the workplace and in society more generally. As organizations created by working-class people, unions have emerged wherever capitalism has. Historically, the growth of unions in western individual societies reflects the development and evolution of the working class-created through the transformation from an agricultural to an industrial economy. The working class, work and hence unions, have grown increasingly diverse over the past 150 years. The basic relationship between workers and employers remains essentially unchanged since the early days of capitalism. Individual workers compete amongst themselves in the labour market while employers compete to hire workers at prices they prefer. While this seems like a fee and equitable dynamic, it is an illusion: Since capitalist employers own the means of production, workers become dependent.
