Forms of union power in the collective agreement. The vast majority of workers become members of unions by virtue of the fact that they are hired into an already-unionized workplace. In workplaces where unions are not yet established, workers must engage in a legal process known as union certification. Unionization drives normally get underway in one of two ways. Seeking to organize groups of workers in specific workplaces or particular sectors of the economy that are strategically important to the union"s growth and bargaining power. Most unions focus on increasing the proportion of union members in specific sectors of the economy rather than spreading themselves too thinly throughout many sectors. Organizing in this manner is sometimes a quick route to a certification victory because workers are prepared to certify without much advance work by union organizers.
