Many people work under alienating, unsatisfying, and/or stressful conditions. Do not accept it and find ways to resist. Individual strategies of resistance, including: quitting, exerting little effort on the job, petty theft, sabotage. Individual acts of resistance rarely change structural conditions of work. Plus, key concepts: unions, collective agreements, strikes. (cid:498)unions were good at one time, but they"ve outlived their usefulness(cid:499) globe & mail, may. Unions have: ended child labour, fought for fair wages, workers compensation, maternity leave, unemployment insurance, pensions, lunch breaks, overtime pay, minimum wage, 8 hour work day. Unions emerge from and are a product of the fundamental difference of interest between workers and employers. Great majority of working people gain their livelihood through paid work i. e. selling their capacity to labour/work (labour power) to employers in return for a wage or salary. Workers agree to work under the direction of an employer in return for a wage.
