LABR 2P93 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Industrial Unionism, Liberal Democracy, Semi-Colony
Document Summary
China, c1919: a state compromised by colonialism and capitalism. Maintained rule by making concessions with europeans interested in economic opportuniies in. Controlled by both many interior and external powers (1911) People started to move from country side to these concessions for wage labour. In much of the world the emergence of industrial society, at least to some extent, occurred under foreign dominaion. In this non-western world, workers were far more opposed to the government than in the west. Workers" interests were not only opposed to those of their capitalist bosses, but also to the foreigners who ran their country. Under these circumstances, naionalism was revoluionary, whereas in the west it was patrioic. In chapter 7, mason clearly shows how crucial the working-class was an ani-colonial and ani- capitalist force in early 20th century china. Working-class intervenion in the may fourth movement (1919) is a clear example.
