You had to do a certain number of steps, one of which was a hypothesis- a statement regarding a characteristic of 1+ pops. A very big component of statistics, is being able to test different hypotheses to see if they are valid or not! Hypothesis testing: a procedure, based on sample evidence and probability used to test statements (or claims) regarding a characteristic of one or more population.
