Document Summary

Kine 1p90- blood vessels and circulation pt. Blood is constantly reconditioned so composition remains relatively constant. Reconditioning organs receive more blood than needed for metabolic needs. Blood flow to other organs (skeletal muscle) serves only to meet their metabolic needs. Ex: the requirements of the muscle tissues during exercise can increase 15-20x compares to resting levels. Only the absolute blood flow to the brain is kept constant. The volume of flow through a vessel is directly proportional to the pressure gradient between the 2 ends of the vessels, and inversely related to the resistance encountered. The pressure gradient is the difference in pressure between the beginning and end of the vessel. Resistance is caused by the friction between the flowing blood and the vessel walls. Depends on 3 factors: blood viscosity, vessel length, vessel radius resistance a 1/r4. Describes the relationship between pressure, resistance and flow.
