KINE 2P84 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Bone Resorption, Ossification, Osteocyte
KINE 2P84 Growth and Development
Growth Rate
- Episodic growth: growth is not completely continuous, it comes in short episodes
- Seasonal growth: some seasons allow us to grow more (esp. summer)
Scaling
- Ratio standards = strength/kg
- Dimensionality = strength/ht^2
- Allometric = strength = a*mass^k
From Birth to Maturity
- Head increases x2
- Trunk increase x3
- Arms increase x4
- Legs increase x5
Physique: body form/build
- Sheldon’s Classification
o Endomorphy: roundness, adiposity
o Mesomorphy: muscle
o Ectomorphy: slender, linear, light
- Scale 1-7 (low-high) (endo, meso, ecto)
o Endomorph 7-1-1
Bone Tissue and Skeletal Growth
Bone cells
- Osteoblast – bone formation
- Osteoclast – bone resorption
- Osteocyte – regulation of flow of minerals and nutrients
- Osteogenic cell
Growth + Remodeling
- Infancy – 50% annually
- Adulthood – 5% annually
Youth: formation > resorption
Adult: formation = resorption
Old: formation < resorption
- Osteoporosis
o Prevent: exercise, nutrition
