KINE 3P41 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Nasal Spray, Nerve Tract, Immune System
Document Summary
Pni- connection between our thoughts and all bodily functions. Brain body connection- neural-nerves in glands and organs linked to brain. Endocrine-hormones communicates with cells in the body: psychoneuroimmunology, showed immune functions linked to psychosocial factors- cns, immune system and disease. 1981: ground-breaking book-groups of nerves connected to blood vessels and immune system cells. Three areas of pni research: nervous system>immune> endocrine, psychological>immunity>health, immunity>behaviour. #2 and #3 are very difficult to study and understand and are the focus of the course. Brain-neuropeptides-body chemicals running through the nervous system that acts directly on the brain: over 100 neuropeptides id"ed, peptides were like the genetics of the 1970"s, there is probably a peptide solution to every medical problem . 1900"s found women who give birth and breast-feed produce lots of oxytocin. 1st peptide to be sequenced and synthesized in 1954 (vingeaud-nobel prize in chem) Pitocin and syntocinin are the most common. Cannot take orally because blood/brain barrier and stomach destroys oxytocin.
