Using conflict theory in sociology of sport: Identifies and suggests ways in which sport is used to reinforced (mainly) and challenge inequalities. Nhl and sport canada example in the text. Focuses mostly on the negatives of sport, seemingly ignoring the positives (ex. empowerment, a possible tool to overcome inequality) There is an overemphasis on class at the expense of gender, race, and sexuality. Development of self through the interactions of humans. Unlike functionalism and conflict, which are macro perspectives. Studies specific behaviours of interacting individuals caught in identifiable face- to-face social settings. Suggests that people evaluate their own conduct by comparing themselves with others. Involves acceptance and resistance of messages (what others think and behave, individuals will accept or resist- showing agency) By learning to take the role of the other, young children take an important step toward becoming a full-fledged member of a group and of society. The i" is not passive (it has agency!!)
