Critical history recognized the importance of historical and political context. When history can demonstrate that the assumptions supporting the status quo have been socially constructed, as opposed to being natural or intrinsically right, a foundation for critique of the status quo has been laid. Anti-doping programs seek to preserve what is intrinsically valuable about sport. This intrinsic value if often referred to as the spirit of sport , it is the essence of olympism, it is how we play true. Doping is fundamentally contrary to the spirit of sport. Struggles over the meaning, purpose, and organization of sports always occur in particular social, political, and economic contexts. People create sport activities within the constraints of the social worlds in which they live, those with the most power generally have the greatest impact on the nature of sports .
