Document Summary

The core of this course is newton"s laws of motion. However, there are more advanced concepts (energy and momentum) that allow us alternative interesting perspectives on newtonian mechanics, and ones that are often deeper and more insightful. Energy and momentum build on the solid foundation of newton"s laws of motion, but have the advantage that in advanced work energy and momentum are more useful concepts than force. We"ll see this in our introductory study of the special theory of relativity at the end of our course, and in our introductory study of quantum mechanics at the end of second semester (phys 1p22/1p92). In this chapter we"ll discuss energy and in the following chapter we"ll discuss momentum. In beginning to study energy, we"ll take a somewhat historical approach. The roots of the energy concept are in the early discussions about heat.
