POLI 2F20 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Population Control, Agribusiness, Neoliberalism
Document Summary
Hunger is the more straightforward, while poverty and development are likely to be interpreted differently, depending on worldview. The reality is there is no agreement to the definitions, causes, or solutions to any of these three global phenomena. Ir has only recently begun to pay attention to these three phenomena, despite their prevalence. Consistent with the disagreement over definitions, causes, solutions there exists two major (competing) theoretical approaches within ir that seek to explain the three: an orthodox and critical/alternative approach. Despite economic growth since the end of wwii poverty and hunger remain and inequality - related to development - remain high. A gendered analysis is important as well - a majority of the worlds poorest people are women. Lack of money and un(der)employment tends to be - rightly or wrongly - informed by a western orthodox approach. Employment and the money that arises from it are seen as inherently good.
