Praise of democracy athens a model for all of greece. Individual liberty mixed with civic sacrifice for the common good. Spartans sacrifice themselves but they don"t have individual freedom. Decisions are better because of debate and deliberation. Extend number of people making decision more likely decision will be correct. The dead died at the peak of life don"t feel sorry for them. Athenian power leaves lasting monuments, both good and evil. Recognize the bad we"ve done because it is part of our name/reputation. Athens needs no homer polis as one big achilles. Our greatness is so great we don"t need poet. Starts in the piraeus (port of athens) Thucydides refers to its cause and possible prevention in the future. The plague makes citizens super athenians, but this kills them. Connection of plague and who athenians already are. Show athens at highest power then lowers. What will kill athens is athens herself. Tragedy: what gives character strength is what kills them.
