Isaiah berlin: life has many ends which can never be made commensurate. A liberal society has a plurality of interests which is the fact of liberal society. Not one vision of justice nor one over arching ideology. It is about defending the pluralities of life. Also failed experience of communism in ussr and china, influenced berlin as well second world war. Mill is talking about advancing all opinions in public. Society progresses through competition along as it is fair. Poisons can be used to murder people, but may also benefit as long as the sale is regulated. Freedom of speech and hate speech: u. s. much more libertarian. Where there is agreement on ends of life there is no debate. People who agree on end of life live in a religious, oriented community. Rousseau says society can be based on the general will, which is a common good and justice. Will i will be forced to be free.
