Public sector workers are sometimes compared to the situation of women, or domestic labourers, who are predominantly women. What do i mean by this? (cid:862)i(cid:374) a se(cid:374)se, the so(cid:272)ial (cid:449)o(cid:396)ke(cid:396) o(cid:396) (cid:374)u(cid:396)se o(cid:396) tea(cid:272)he(cid:396) is i(cid:374) a si(cid:373)ila(cid:396) situatio(cid:374) at (cid:449)o(cid:396)k to that i(cid:374) (cid:449)hi(cid:272)h she is (and others are) as mother or lover at home. She loves and cares because she is human. But that loving and caring is doubly exploited. It seems to involve her in unpaid and unfair amounts of work in the home. And it causes her to accept underpaid and often heartbreaking work outside. Yet if she resists, she risks hurting herself and those she cares about, merely to ruffle the state a little. Furthermore, these unions tend to be hierarchical, non-pa(cid:396)ti(cid:272)ipato(cid:396)(cid:455), (cid:858)se(cid:396)(cid:448)i(cid:272)e u(cid:374)io(cid:374)s. (cid:859) this has (cid:271)e(cid:272)o(cid:373)e the domination model of unionism. Conversely, social unionism seeks solidarity with other groups of workers, both in the same sector and beyond.
