PSYC 1F90 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Eardrum, Necker Cube, Oval Window
Document Summary
Wilhelm wundt: physics is the science of reality, psychology is the science of reality, psychophysics (absolute and relative thresholds) Proximal stimulus : pattern of energy falling on sense receptor. Percept ( reality ) : our experience of a stimulus. Sometimes the distal stimulus is there but we do not experience a percept: sensory adaptation (e. g. stabilized retinal images) Sometimes the percept is there but the distal stimulus is not (e. g. necker cube) Sensation : the process by which physical energy patterns falling upon the sense receptor (the proximal stimulus) are transduced to nervous impulses. Perception : the process by which the nervous impulses sent from the sense receptors to the brain is interpreted (constructed) to give rise to the percept. The ear: sound waves vs. sound, the physiology of the ear. Outer ear: acoustic transduction from sound waves to vibration of ear drum.
